Yong tau foo with a twist, and paper wrapped chicken?!
I was surprised when my wife told me about a shop she knew that served fried yong tau foo. Coming from Penang, this was new to me as I am only accustomed to yong tau foo served 'wet' or in a bowl of soup.
The service starts with a waitress handing you a piece of paper which lists all of the food that they serve. You decide the quantity and I must recommend that you put at least a "3" on the paper wrapped chicken or "chi pau kai". The yong tau foo comes fried and with fishball inside. I have never tasted anything that was crunchy and chewy at the same time.
The soup served was red peanut soup and it had a nice taste and fragrance. Once the liquid enters your mouth, you will be flooded with the smell of the peanut and a deep thirst will soon grow, making you unable to stop drinking. Unfortunately the soup can be too oily for some people's taste. Finally the chi pau kai comes wrapped in paper and is dripping with oil, but it is one of those guilty pleasures that you should never miss. Exercise moderation and you should be fine. The chicken is full of meat and comes with meat that is easy to cut with a knife or fork. The meat is fresh, fragrant and melts in your mouth.
This is another hidden gem of Kuala Lumpur and I highly recommend visiting this place for a brand new outlook on yong tau foo.
