Interesting for a first-timer
I think it is fun to go to the the night market once in a while. Don't have high hopes for the food as there are not many varieties. Despite being the second longest night market in Malaysia, the food choices are repetitive.
I hate the stinky tofu as it smells like shoes that have been soaked with feet odour. It was so disgusting that it is so hard to finish eating just one. It is a type of food that one either loves or detests. It seems to be the most popular stall since stinky tofus are quite a rare offering in Malaysia. I would recommend the coconut ice-cream and some cake varieties.
Hectic and crowded
Here is a small warning to all who are interested to go to this place; "Go early or suffer the consequences". I had to park far away which required me to walk a fair distance. Seeing as how this is a night market after all, it was pretty hard to plan for a rendezvous point with my friends who drove there in their own cars!
The food was subpar at best and while there were many varieties, it just wasn't worth the time.
Honestly, I don't really fancy Taman Connought's night market. Parking there is pretty crazy. I had to park really far away just to get a parking (by the really huge smelly drain). And then walk all the way to the preferable starting point. And considering the fact that it was a really long night market, the entrances were everywhere! So it wasn't really easy to plan where to start and where to go.
The things there are like any other night market. Clothes, food, accessories, cheap goods. But the special thing about that night market would be the smelly tofu. I could smell it from maybe 15stalls away! It was so smelly and it smelled like drain water to me. I really disliked it. Not only that, the place is pretty dirty. I kept stepping on unwanted rubbish and there isn't really anything that unique about it anyways.
Wouldn't go back there again.
A Great Night Market to Shop
Taman Connaught night market is one of the most crowded and busiest night market once a week on wednesday night. The night market is almost 1 kilometres long and there are varieties of choices on food & beverages, clothes, accessories and sports wear. The night market used to begin at around 6pm and the street will close only available for the night market purpose.
The price of the goods sold is fair though, the crowd is huge, and sometimes it is quite hard to move from one spot to another, so, it is advisable for visitors to buy when you see, do not wait until you have walk a distance because you may not find the stall easily. I used to purchase some sports wear as the price is really "competitive" even though the quality is not as good as those presenting in the branded outlet.
There is one stall selling Asam Laksa which taste really good, it should be somewhere near KFC. The soup taste yummy, the portion is just nice, price is also fair, but the hygiene is a bit low as it is a street market which is understandable. This is definitely a good place to shop around if you do have plenty of leisure time on Wednesday night.
Best Hotspot for the Pasar Malam fans
Indeed, the Taman Connaught Pasar Malam is a long stretch of stalls- but you'll find many similar food stalls: stinky tofu, curry fishball, 'lok-lok', bubble tea, etc. The food price of similar stalls varies slightly, but overall it is affordable.
On my first visit there, it was very difficult to find parking, but a petrol station nearby double as a paid parking lot, and it's much safer to park there than the dark housing neighborhoods, especially if you're going to the pasar late at night.
I noticed the long queue for stinky tofu, but since I'm not a fan myself, I went for the curry mee instead- quite tasty for its taste. The pasar malam is very packed- expect to bump shoulders with people, and be careful of pickpockets. There's a stall here which sells ladies' hair accessories- hand-crafted hairbands with swarovski-like crystals blings blings. Not cheap, but definitely well-made, beautiful accessories girls will love.
For stinky tofu lover
Right after you steps out from your car, you will get stinky smell which is not pleasant to me. The market is long, stretch across the shop lots and is flooded with people. Once you enter the market, you will find lots of street foods and phone accessories. You can grab some finger food while strolling down the market. You will then find out the stinky smell is actually the famous (notorious to me) stinky tofu. I dare you to grab one and try out. Just make sure the gravy does not split on your shirt, else you will get the smell for the whole night
Who doesn't love Pasar Malam?
If you like night markets, you should definitely check this out. Taman Connaught Pasar Malam is the second longest night market in Malaysia after the one at Setia Alam. You can find a seemingly endless variety of food choices here, satisfying all your food cravings in one place.
These are a few examples I would like to recommend especially, and a few of them were endorsed by 8TV’s Ho Chak: Chew Chew Stinky Tofu (超超臭豆腐), char kuey teow, China burger, Okonomiyaki (a.k.a. Japanese pizza) and Tokyo Crepe. Other than eating, it is also a good place to shop for accessories for yourself and your phone for example earrings, phone casings etc.
p/s: Go before 8pm if you want to avoid the human traffic jam.
