The A&W franchise was brought into Malaysia in 1963 by Mr. and Mrs. Lie Boff from USA. Their first outlet was opened in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman making it the first fast food outlet in Malaysia. This was followed in 1965 with the first Drive-in restaurant in Petaling Jaya.
A&W Malaysia was bought over by KUB in 2001.

Root bear and corn dog
In case you didn't know, A&W is famous for their special root bear and cony dogs. Try to dine in - root beers ordered for dining in come in a frosted glass mug. No, it does not make the drink taste any better, but I do think it makes the drinking a little more fun! A&W's root bear is different from those typical canned root beers - the taste is a lot stronger (i.e. sweeter).
The corn dogs are a must try too - unlike the conventional fast food restaurants which sell only burgers and fried chicken wings/fries, they sell their hot dogs too! Cony dog = hot dog. For all Singaporeans - IT IS A MUST TRY. Since the A&W franchise has closed down in Singapore, you have got to try this when you go to Malaysia.
Would definitely be better with metal utensils for waffles
When you think A&W, chances are, the first thing that comes into your mind are waffles. Why? Because it is cheap and delicious. With just RM6, you can order your waffles with butter & syrup, 1 ice cream scoop or even 2 ice cream scoops. The taste is definitely on par with Waffle World with the only downside being that you have to eat it with plastic utensils which easily breaks.
Depending on which location you go, you can actually ask for different flavours of ice cream for your waffles. One such place I know of that you can do that is the one opposite Amcorp Mall. I have thoroughly enjoyed eating at this place ever since I was a little kid and it is sad to know that the branches of A&W restaurants are closing down one by one. The ones at Sunway Pyramid and SS2 has been closed down for quite awhile now.
I really hope this restaurant stays in Malaysia for a long time and not end up like Shakey's Pizza or White Castle.
Can't get enough of root beer.
I only love A&W mainly for 1 thing. Their root beer. It's a non-alcoholic beer and unlike Coca-cola and Pepsi, it isn't as gassy, and it has a satisfying taste. You can order a root beer float as well, and the usually it comes in a big jug. The burgers and fries, unfortunately, aren't good. The size of the burger is too small, and before you can start enjoying your burger, you've already finished it.
I have spent countless times with my friends here, just sitting and chatting. I had some fond memories there, so I felt really sad that all their outlets in Penang had closed down. Overall, I still would recommend people to try. It may not be the best, but it is still good.
I have a very fond memory of A&W in PJ since my trip when I was a kid. Numerous birthday parties were held at this outlet back then and up until now. Their mascot is something that will be remembered of. I can simply say that this is the place for family to enjoy fast food.
I will always love their waffles and root beer. Nothing else in this world can compare to them. It is sad to see that their outlets had to close down one after another. Taste-wise, the menus are good and I loved the fact that they still have the necessary ingredients in their burgers like pickles, onions and dressings. It shows efforts and how they still maintain their food quality.
I just hope A&W can survive many many years down the road so I can always enjoy their warm waffles with ice cream.
The Underdog that didn't survive
I always saw A&W as one who didn't directly compete with McDonald and KFC. No other fast food chain sells delicious hotdogs in a rich and spicy sauce mixed chopped onions and where you can wash it down with a big mug of Root Beer. The price was reasonable and the service was good. It really was a big shame when the only existing outlet in Penang that I knew of, closed recently.
Now I occasionally buy a can of Root Beer and as I sip it, I will reminisce of the sweet days when the dancing bear mascot of A&W was still aired on tv.
A good place for waffles.
Sadly enough, you can rarely find an outlet of A&W in Klang Valley. Even the nearest branch to my university was closed down recently.
But I am still a fan of their curly fries and waffles since I was a kid. If I were to choose between McDonald’s fries and A&W’s curly fries, I would definitely choose the latter because the curly fries taste great enough even without any add-ons like McShaker seasoning.
Also, I love their waffles very much especially topped with ice-cream. The waffle is very crunchy where you cannot get it from other food stalls outside as their waffles are normally very moist and soft. And I don’t really drink carbonated beverages but their root beer float is a must-drink every time I visit A&W. Try it and you will know how is the taste of fresh root beer different from those canned ones.
Great curly fries
I used to go to A&W every weekend when I was in my primary school days. The branch at SP Plaza sponsored the top scorers of each level in my primary school to one year's worth of hotdog meal. So I would get a free set hotdog, fries and Root Beer whenever I went.
However, the branch closed down a few years after I got into secondary school. It was quite sad because I really love their hotdogs with the really thick sausage. So I was really excited to hear that they reopened in SP in another mall a few years back. Now whenever I'm back in Malaysia, I always make it a point to go to A&W especially for their curly fries. It's the best curly fries in my opinion and I don't have to wait for Mcdonald's curly fries which only features every Chinese New Year.
Oh man, gone are the days when A&W was so near where I stayed. In Singapore, A&W is history, and we as Singaporeans can only WISH that somehow the franchise would re-start and we'd all be happy people...
Well, A&W is of course best known for its root beer, and what better way to enjoy root beer than to top ice-cream on it? Yes, A&W's root beer float is one of the best desserts I've ever had! It's never the same, having A&W root beer float at an outlet and having it at home.
It doesn't matter what country I go. Malaysia or any other country (if I ever go...), if I ever see an A&W outlet, I'll rush in without a hint of doubt!
In Singapore, we don't have an A&W store here as they've packed up and left our shores long ago. however, I still remember when I sipped on my very first root beer float, I was ecstatic with the creamy smooth taste!
Needless to say, I practically ran into the A&W when I saw it in JB!! I was overcome by excitement after seeing all the items on the menu again after more than a 10 year absence from my eyes!
I ate myself silly that day, and even went back the next day for more. nothing's changed and my old favourites the curly fries and the root beer float is still the same all these years!
Neglected superior root beer
The birth of many fast food chains like Mc Donald and KFC and the lack of new ideas had cause A&W to be neglected. I am a big fan of A&W's waffles and root beer. Unfortunately, the closing of 24 outlets in Malaysia had made A&W become a hard to spot fast food restaurant.
I remember there was a time when I was walking on the street in the city center and I saw A&W. I was quite happy as I really miss their root beer. So I crossed the road and all that awaited for me was disappointment. The restaurant was closed down. Instead of getting my favorite root beer, I went to Mc Donald which located next to it for an ice-cream.
Please tell me the closing down of 24 outlets is just a step for the company to come back with better service and more surprises for us, Malaysians. So far the only outlet I know, that is still operating, is the one located near Amcorp Mall.
