The McCafé concept was originated in Melbourne, Australia where McDonald's created its first cafe inside an existing restaurant in 1993. Malaysia's first McCafé was officially launched in Kota Damansara in July 2012, offering an extensive menu of premium beverages with a selection of pastries, cakes and muffins.

All Hype But No Substance

I remember having my facebook filled with people wanting to try the McCafe on my news feed. Although, most of them were just people wanting to get with the trends, curiosity got the better of me. So when I found out there's once McCafe open at Kota Damansara, I figured that I might as well feed my curiosity since I had to fetch my friend at Segi University anyways.

So far, I have tried their Mocha Frappucino and their hot cup of Mocha. The Frappucino was actually pretty decent. With a little bit of extras like chocolate chips or some other topping, it could definitely put up a fight with Starbucks's Mocha Frappucino. The hot cup of mocha was pretty disappointing though as it tasted like a reheated version of a can of Nescafe. The espresso cup, not the drink but the cup, was a surprise for me. With me thinking about how much of a cheapskate fast-food restaurants tend to be, I actually thought they'd give me some sort of plastic cup.

As a single item cannot cost more than RM10, I wouldn't mind coming here as an alternative to Starbucks or Coffee Bean but it is definitely not one of my main options.

Cute gimmick

The Mcdonald's McCafe is obviously an attempt by McDonalds to enter the market that is so tightly controlled by Starbucks and Coffee Bean. Don't get me wrong, I love to see new companies challenge other companies and I'm more than happy to support the company of my all time favorite fast food franchise.

You basically get mediocre coffee but the muffins are not bad. Prices are comparable to what you get from Starbucks but what the McCafe doesn't offer is ambience. IT is a bit confusing to me because Starbucks and Coffee Bean's image aims to provide the customer with top notch quality coffee and also a nice and quiet environment to drink your coffee in. Placing the McCafe INSIDE the compounds of a McDonalds does NOT give you a serene environment.

I found myself wondering why I Was sipping a mocha latte amongst the many people gorging themselves with burgers and fries and slurping down large cups of Coke. the image just don't go well. I think the McCafe would do better if it detached itself from the McDonald's outlet.

McCafe is finally here

Finally the long waited McCafe is in Malaysia! I first saw the McCafe sign in Singapore airport and decided to give it a try while waiting for my flight. The varieties of food available do not disappoint me and I really enjoy their coffee and muffin. Once I reached Malaysia, I started to look for McCafe and I was told there is no McCafe yet in Malaysia. Until now, finally McCafe have their first outlet in Kota Damansara! I rushed myself to give it a try. The coffee is standard, nothing changed, good quality control from them. The cakes seem to be slightly smaller but still enough to have as tea break.

Not too good, not too bad.

I have always wanted to try it since they opened its first McCafe in Kota Damansara, but it’s a little bit too far from my place. I feel so grateful that there’s a new McCafe near my university, which is in Taman Connaught.

Their coffees are actually not too bad. But please be reminded to mention the size you want when ordering, or else they will give you the medium-sized drink, which is normally RM1 more expensive.

As for their cakes, most of them are quite pricey but I would like to recommend the Chocolate Lava Cake. It was served warm with rich and creamy chocolate filling.
