JPOT really is nothing to shout about - given its mundane, run-of-the-mill decor, its bustling atmosphere and its mediocre food, it really just is like any other hotpot restaurant out there. I expected better from the JUMBO chain, although I suppose since this is more mid-tier, they decided to down their game for it.
The food, for starters, is quite wide in variety, with seafood, red meats, and different soup bases. Jack of all trades, master of none, though, I didn't particularly like anything I tried, save for the live prawns.
The service staff was really rude. I was served by this Chinese lady who had a very stern resting face, and made no attempt to smile at us while greeting us or while taking our order. She was pretty curt and brusque with us, which made for a bad experience. Given that the outlet my friends and I went to was crowded, too, she seemed rather impatient with us and like she just wanted to get our meal over with.
I would suggest going to a steamboat buffet at Chinatown instead, for a cheaper price and a more cordial server.
If you're heading to JPOT during dinner time, prepare to spend more han $20. However, if you feel like having steamboat and the time you eat doesn't matter to you go during tea time! From 2-5pm on weekdays, JPOT at Tampines one has a special set of $23.90++ for 2 people.
The set comes with a combination platter that includes live prawns and my favourite jumbo pork ball. It also comes with a choice of meat, noodles and 2 soup bases. They also have a lunch set which costs $16.80++ per person which has pretty much the same thing.
As for the food, the ingredients are nothing special but the herbal soup and the DIY sauces you can make are the main drawn of JPOT.
Decided to try Jpot at Vivocity one day as we always spot a huge crowd at Jpot. We entered at about 6pm and was told off rather rudely by the staff to finish and leave by 730pm so that they can serve the dinner crowd. I do understand that some places have a time limit for diners but it was put across rather rudely to us and I was a little unhappy at first. But the thought of having a hot pot of soup cheered me up slightly.
They have 7 different soup bases and nearly 100 meats, seafood, vegetables on their menu. They even had dim sum too. Nothing too fantastic about their meats and soups. Perhaps I have been having too much Japanese sukiyaki wagyu shabu shabu that spoiled my tastebuds.
Ambience at Jpot however, is not bad as the interior is brightly lit and well ventilated. The tables were placed sufficiently apart and it made dining comfortable. However, as it is not a buffet steamboat, prices can amount to quite a bit and the portion provided isn't much either.
Founded in 2009, JPOT offers the best of Individual Hotpot dining, with 7 different soup bases, a clean and comfortable ambience, although much of their presentation is copied from other successful hotpot brands.
Ambience at JPOT is good, with bright lighting, well ventilated interior, and spacious furniture. Tables are set for individual hotpots, and their food presentation is styled after China Hai Di Lao Huo Guo. Ordering is done through tablets are each table.
JPOT is largely self-service, although food orders and bills are presented by staff. I also noticed that staff are quite efficient are clearing away empty / dirty plates. Otherwise, there isn't much interaction. I discovered through repeat visits that their service recovery is extremely poor. Equipment throughout the restaurant is not always functioning, leading to diner frustration. Not only is there no apology or service recovery, but staff take a very long time to react to diners experiencing frustration. This creates an unpleasant memory, ensuring that diners will not return again.
There is a good range and variety of food at JPOT. Besides the 7 varieties of soup base, there is almost 90 items on the menu, ranging from meat to seafood to vegetables and even dim sum. However, prices at JPOT are quite expensive, as it's not a buffet but ala-carte, amounting to about SGD $25 and above per person. And the quantity provided isn't much either.
The Silky Porridge base is simple, but fragrant, flavourful and thick. The Bak Kut Teh base is peppery but not too overwhelming, and has cloves of garlic and a pork rib within. The Fish Head Soup is lovely and milky, with nice chunks of fresh fish within. The JPOT Superior Broth is rich in taste despite its thin appearance, but got a little too salty near the end.
I find that the quantity of food is quite little for the high price, making this not so value for money. But the ingredients are fresh, and well presented, copied from the presentation style of China Hai Di Lao Huo Guo.
I considered myself really lucky when I first chanced upon it. It was such an impromptu decision as we were just walking around Vivocity when we saw this restaurant and decided to just try it. Since then it is one of my favorite steamboat restaurants, with good food and ambience. =)
The steamboat is not like the usual type, where everyone share one big pot. This is supplied individually, thus you can choose your own base soup (Tom yum is really good!). If you want to try different soup bases, I recommend you to go with a group of friends and ordered a different kind each and share haha. Well that is the economical way, at least for me. ;)
The price range depends on what you ordered for the steamboat ingredients. If you did not order much and of course not expensive seafood and all, having a meat dish, seafood dish, and some small other side dishes will not take you out of the $20 range. Remember to try the clams, they are really good!
Having had bad experiences of cramped, stuffy table arrangements and frequent spillages that upset our meals, my family has never been a great fan of steamboats.
After our first visit to JPot, however, we were surprised to find ourselves considering a second visit there - just for a rare indulgence of the food.
When we first entered the restaurant, what immediately caught our attention was the extremely well-organised layout of the place - with each table having a personalised hotplate and a vent to contain excessive steam, it made for a most cosy and convenient dining experience for the family, which we had not enjoyed in our previous experiences.
The wide range of options for set dishes and broths left us spoilt for choice, and we each ended up ordering a variety of local and traditional broths and dishes, which we shared across the tables. The soups were definitely worth the wait, with their flavourful yet not overly-masking tastes that allowed us to savour the best of our chosen ingredients. My family's personal favourites were the Bak Kut Teh broth, which we found not too peppery as at most places, and the uniquely slippery yet twangy fish paste that could be squeezed out from a nozzle.
A little grouse we had, however, was with the service. The place seemed severely understaffed at the time and the trainee waiters who attended to us not only made no apologies when delivering a wrong order, but even rolled their eyes at us. Perhaps we had to discount the fact that the restaurant was farely new then and it was a crowded day, but I do believe this is an area that needs to be improved to match up to the prices and standards the place is offering.
All in all, discounting the service, the restaurant makes a good place for a rare treat for the family and friends, and one we would come back for again.
I guessed the differentiator between this steamboat shop and those that springed out along Beach Road is the class. Being more expensive does have its advantage. This steamboat shop provides more comfortable setting for dining and the food presentation was also nicer. Each dish you ordered came nicely laid out on individual plates. The food also looked fresh and appealing.
Another interesting thing about this shop is the sauce. There is a section in the shop where you can mix your own sauce to be used to dip your food. Also, you can learn to make your own meat balls. When you ordered meat ball, it comes as minced meat and a stick where you can use to spin out your own meat balls. You can decide your own size and shape.
What I love about this steamboat place is that each person has their own personal steamboat pot and the pot is divided by 2 so you can chose 2 soup base out of the 8 choices. I never fail to chose their silky porridge because it absolutely delicious. The 1st time i tried steamboat porridge was in China. When i came back to Singapore, I couldn't find a place which has that until i visited J Pot! For those who have yet to tried it, you should get it a go!
It cost about $30-$40 per person which is worth it as it is the set consisted of a range of peas, needle mushrooms, veggies, meat like chicken and pork and fishball and a fish paste in a piping bag which was fun to squeeze out.
The sauce was placed like a buffet spread where you can mix different sauce to your preference.
Jpot provides a unique steamboat experience with a very comfortable and spacious setting. What I love about it is the individual portions of soup, which means that we don’t have to share! And of course, we can select the extensive variety of broths to our own preference – ranging from mild to flavourful. The soup is naturally sweet and tasty to just slurp down my throat from the start.
I would always go for beef. What is steamboat without beef anyway! Their meat varieties are always so tender and succulent, best to be eaten when dipped in their create-your-own condiments. There’s a variety of beef from normal to the higher standards. The prawns are also fresh and juicy with a hint of sweetness. I’ll never fail to gobble down as much food as I can at Jpot as they also provide other meat and seafood for me to savour.
What to expect from Jpot? To me, it’s a bloated and satisfied tummy!
JPOT is my favourite ala-carte steamboat restaurant. It is a Singaporean-style steamboat with local soup bases and i love the superior soup broth, the Bak Kut Teh and the Laksa soup broth. These soup broths are so creatve in a steamboat place and you will be surprised how well the ingredients complement with the soup.
I ordered the set meal lunch set for 2 at $32+ and it was such a splendid choice. The yongtaufoo platter was fresh and looked handmade. They were also very generous with the live prawns which were huge and fresh. The beef loin and marinated chicken tasted pretty well-flavoured and tender. There were also heaps of vegetables and mushrooms to round up the meal healthily
Overall i love JPOT because they will never sacrifice serving high quality fresh food even as they expand. Though slightly pricey, i feel its every penny worth as compared to those bugis steamboats area that are similarly priced but its in a buffet, because the quality of food and soup is really bleah. Settle less for more!
