  • You a Glutton for Greasy Goodness?
Catching me mutter something under my breath about the hectic lunch crowd, a lady introduces herself as Agnes, the lady boss from Johnson You Tiao. She says she’s been in the business of fritters for five years, every day of which she and her husband Johnson have commenced hand-making the dough at 3 am!

She very politely denigrates the increasing popularity of factory-made fritters and how nothing beats the crispiness of one freshly made and fried. By the time she reveals they only use coconut oil to fry their fritters, I’m completely sold and head to her store. On display were a dozen different confections, basking in their golden-brown perfection. At just 3 for $2, I buy way more greasy goodies than my stomach can hold.

I chose the hum chee peng, you-tiao and butterfly fritter. They made for a very different lunch experience from my regular, more savory hawker fare. Well the great thing is that Agnes helped me beat the lunch crowd. But I’m doubtful I could stomach having these for lunch everyday! But if you’re out to feed your afternoon snack attacks?

    Go Johnson.

  • Super-Size My Thosai Anyday
It’d just started to rain unforgivingly, so we ventured the drier sheltered pathways of Tekka Market from Little India MRT and stumbled across Sri Kamala’s! With plethora of Prata places to try in the Little India enclave, we were glad the temperamental weather patterns led us to prata paradise. It’s “no-frills” and no cutleries to boot, Kamala’s no gimmicky tourist-trap. Noshers are here for the flippin’ real deal!

A regular in-line gave us her recommendations just because we’re not too currageous with the curries and chutneys. She said the paper thosai and prata were hands-down her favorites. And we also got poories, what we’d describe to be delectable doughnuts shaped as pancakes.

For those who can’t deal with their dishes soaked and soggy with sauce, Sri Kamala’s serves their sauces separately! Their designated “curry-man” goes about dishing out chickpea chutneys from their distinctive three-tin tiffin carrier. These were the pea-fect complement to our massive paper thosai and pratas, which were the size of bicycle wheels.

But be sure to wash your hands before you start your paper prata party!
