  • Slowly Losing Its Soul
I feel odd reviewing the HungryGoWhere site. Partially, this is due to it having been my writing platform for years. Having been among the top regular contributors to the site over the last few years, I've seen the evolution it's been through.

HungryGoWhere was started by a trio of passionate foodies in 2006. Tan Yung Yih, Wong Hoong An and Dennis Goh gave up comfortable and stable jobs, and dived into the unknown, working out of a borrowed office space.

The idea was to have a channel where diners could easily find eating establishments based on their preferences like price, cuisine or location, and provide feedback as well. Furthermore, operators of such eating establishments could connect with customers directly through this channel, and even advertise their services.

The idea didn't take off. By 2007, into their second year of business, the founders were living on borrowed money, and barely making ends meet. Though they went door-to-door to sell restaurant owners on their idea, many didn't believe that it would work, as this was in the time before facebook and social media.

They eventually brokethrough, by advertising restaurant promotions on the front page, and connecting with their online community. Then restaurant owners started to take notice of the site.

HungryGoWhere was bought by Singtel in 2012, effectively making the founders millionaires within just 6 years.

A major problem with HungryGoWhere that has plagued it from the start is trolling. It's seemingly a place where people go to vent their frustrations with a particular outlet or establishment, and objective and honest reviews are few and far between.

Ever since they were bought by Singtel, some of the useful features on HungryGoWhere have been dropped, like the ability to filter by price. Also, more advertisements now adorn the front page.

Several notable food bloggers have used HungryGoWhere as a platform to help launch their sites into the mainstream as well, including ladyironchef.com and misstamchiak.com
